The rule in brief

The passato prossimo describes completed actions in the past: what you did yesterday, last weekend or on holiday. It has two parts: the present of avere or essere (the auxiliary) plus the past participle of the main verb.

Regular participles drop the infinitive ending and add -ato, -uto or -ito: mangiare → mangiato, vendere → venduto, dormire → dormito. Many common verbs are irregular, so learn them as a list: fatto, visto, preso, scritto, detto, letto, venuto, nato, stato.

Most verbs take avere, and then the participle does not change: Marco ha mangiato, Giulia ha mangiato. Verbs of movement or change of state (andare, partire, tornare, uscire, venire, nascere) and the verb stare take essere, and then the participle agrees with the subject like an adjective: -o, -a, -i or -e. A mixed group of men and women takes the masculine plural -i.
