The rule in brief

The futuro semplice talks about plans, predictions and promises: domani pioverà, l’anno prossimo andrò in Spagna. In everyday speech Italians often use the present for fixed plans, but the future is the natural choice for forecasts and for anything less certain.

Drop the final -e of the infinitive and add -ò, -ai, -à, -emo, -ete, -anno. Verbs in -are also change the a of the infinitive to e: parlare → parlerò, while prendere → prenderò and partire → partirò. Verbs in -care and -gare add an h to keep the hard sound (cercherò, pagherò), and verbs in -ciare and -giare lose the i (comincerò, mangerò).

Several common verbs have a shortened or irregular stem but the same endings: andare → andrò, avere → avrò, potere → potrò, vedere → vedrò, essere → sarò, fare → farò, venire → verrò.
