The rule in brief

The imperative gives instructions, advice and directions. For tu, -are verbs end in -a (gira, parla) and -ere and -ire verbs end in -i (prendi, apri). The noi and voi forms are the same as the present tense: andiamo!, finite i compiti!

To tell someone you call tu not to do something, use non + infinitive: non bere, non guidare. The other persons simply add non: non andiamo, non aprite.

When you speak formally to someone as Lei, the endings swap: -are verbs end in -i (scusi, giri) and -ere and -ire verbs end in -a (prenda, senta). Verbs with an irregular present usually build the Lei form on the io stem: vengo → venga, faccio → faccia, vado → vada.

Five common verbs have a short tu form with an apostrophe: va’ (andare), fa’ (fare), da’ (dare), sta’ (stare) and di’ (dire). Except for di’, the present-tense forms vai, fai, dai and stai are just as correct and very common in speech.
