Essere or avere? Passato prossimo auxiliary exercises

The rule in brief

Every passato prossimo needs an auxiliary: a form of avere or essere before the past participle. Choosing the right one is the most common A2 mistake, but a few rules cover most verbs.

Use avere with verbs that have, or can have, a direct object (comprare, mangiare, vedere) and with many activities that have none: camminare, dormire, viaggiare, lavorare. Watch out: camminare and viaggiare involve movement, yet they still take avere.

Use essere with verbs of movement from one place to another (andare, arrivare, partire, tornare), verbs of staying or changing state (stare, restare, rimanere, nascere, diventare), succedere and costare, and with every reflexive verb (svegliarsi, divertirsi).

Some verbs, such as cominciare and finire, take both. With an object they take avere (ho finito il lavoro); without an object, when the thing itself begins or ends, they take essere (il film è finito). With essere, remember that the participle agrees with the subject.
