Italian articulated prepositions exercises

A free A2 (elementary) Italian exercise on Preposizioni articolate (articulated prepositions): 60 multiple choice questions in 4 sets, from core practice to a mixed review, each with the answer and a short explanation. Or take a random round of 10. No account needed.

The rule in brief

When the prepositions di, a, da, in and su come before a definite article, the two words join into one: a + il = al, di + la = della, in + lo = nello. These are the preposizioni articolate. Di becomes de- and in becomes ne- when they combine.

To find the right form, first choose the article the noun needs on its own (il treno, lo zaino, l’albergo, la stazione, i musei, gli studenti, le camere), then attach it to the preposition. The ending follows the article exactly: lo gives -llo (allo stadio), l’ gives -ll’ (dall’ufficio), gli gives -gli (dagli Stati Uniti) and le gives -lle (delle camere).

Con and per normally stay separate: con il treno, per la stazione. Remember too that some fixed expressions use the bare preposition with no article, such as a casa, in centro and in treno.
