The rule in brief
Reflexive verbs end in -si in the infinitive: alzarsi (to get up), lavarsi (to wash), chiamarsi (to be called). The -si is a pronoun that refers back to the subject, and it changes with the person: mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si.
In the present tense the pronoun goes before the conjugated verb, which follows the normal -are, -ere or -ire pattern: mi alzo, ti metti, si veste. Many daily-routine verbs are reflexive in Italian even when English needs no "myself": svegliarsi, vestirsi, riposarsi, addormentarsi. Some describe feelings (divertirsi, preoccuparsi), and in the plural ci, vi and si can also mean "each other": ci vediamo domani.
In the passato prossimo every reflexive verb takes essere, and the participle agrees with the subject: Giulia si è svegliata, i ragazzi si sono divertiti, le ragazze si sono sentite stanche.
| alzarsi (present) | alzarsi (passato prossimo) | |
|---|---|---|
| io | mi alzo | mi sono alzato / alzata |
| tu | ti alzi | ti sei alzato / alzata |
| lui / lei | si alza | si è alzato / alzata |
| noi | ci alziamo | ci siamo alzati / alzate |
| voi | vi alzate | vi siete alzati / alzate |
| loro | si alzano | si sono alzati / alzate |
