The rule in brief
Indirect object pronouns replace a person introduced by a: telefono a Giulia becomes le telefono, regalo un libro a Marco becomes gli regalo un libro. Like direct pronouns, they go before the conjugated verb.
Mi, ti, ci and vi look the same as the direct forms. The difference is in the third person: gli means "to him", le means "to her", and the formal Le means "to you" when you speak to someone as Lei. For "to them", everyday Italian uses gli; the formal loro goes after the verb (telefoniamo loro) and sounds bookish.
Typical verbs with a are telefonare, regalare, scrivere, dare, mandare, prestare, rispondere, spiegare, dire and chiedere. The verb piacere also works this way: the person who likes something is the indirect object. Mi piace il caffè literally means "coffee is pleasing to me", so "he likes" is gli piace and "she likes" is le piace.
| Singular | Plural | |
|---|---|---|
| 1st person | mi (to me) | ci (to us) |
| 2nd person | ti (to you) | vi (to you all) |
| 3rd person | gli (to him), le (to her) | gli (to them) |
| Formal you | Le (to you) |
