Present subjunctive

Use the present subjunctive in a che-clause after an opinion, doubt, wish, feeling, or evaluation about a present or future situation: penso che sia, dubito che venga, è importante che partecipino. For -are verbs, the singular endings are -i and the third-person plural is -ino (parli, parlino). For -ere and -ire verbs, they are -a and -ano (prenda, prendano; dorma, dormano). Many -isc verbs keep -isc- (capisca). Essere has sia, siamo, siate, siano; avere has abbia, abbiamo, abbiate, abbiano.

  • Penso che questo film sia interessante.· I think this film is interesting.
  • Secondo me, la soluzione è semplice.· In my opinion, the solution is simple.
  • È importante che tutti partecipino.· It is important that everyone participates.
  • Non credo che sia una buona idea.· I do not think it is a good idea.

Form, meaning, and contrast

Do not put every opinion in the subjunctive. In «Secondo me, la soluzione è semplice», there is no che-clause, so the verb is indicative. In «Penso che la soluzione sia semplice», the same judgement enters a dependent che-clause, so use sia. A plain fact such as «So che la soluzione è semplice» normally uses the indicative. Compare the speaker’s attitude and the clause structure before you choose the mood.

  • Capisco il tuo punto, però non sono d’accordo.· I understand your point, but I do not agree.
  • Preferisco il treno, dato che è più comodo.· I prefer the train because it is more comfortable.
  • Penso che…· I think that…
  • Secondo me…· In my opinion…
