Defend an opinion

Develop opinions and reactions through a focused speaking itinerary.

Speaking task

At your film club, a friend says the ending of La luce in piazza is too easy. Record a 90–120 second reply for that friend. State whether you agree, name two precise moments from the reviews or discussion, acknowledge one fair point on the other side, and explain your own conclusion. Use a present subjunctive to give an opinion about the film and a past subjunctive to evaluate a completed scene.

  • Capisco la critica, ma non credo che tutti i vicini abbiano cambiato idea.· I understand the criticism, but I do not think all the neighbours changed their minds.
  • Penso che la signora anziana renda il finale meno semplice.· I think the older woman makes the ending less simple.
  • È vero che il ragazzo ha poco spazio.· It is true that the young man has little time.
  • La signora resta vicino alla porta invece di entrare subito.· The older woman stays by the door instead of going in at once.

Performance and self-check

Plan an opening claim, two scene details, a response to the other view, and a conclusion. Record once. Then listen: can your friend identify your evidence, or do you only say that the film is good or bad? Check the two subjunctive forms and repeat with fewer notes.

  • Mi sorprende che gli autori abbiano lasciato il ragazzo senza una storia.· I am surprised the writers left the young man without a story.
  • Tuttavia, la scena delle sedie mostra una collaborazione reale.· However, the chair scene shows real cooperation.
  • Il mio esempio è la signora che porta una fotografia.· My example is the woman who brings a photograph.
  • Per questo motivo, il finale mi sembra credibile.· For this reason, the ending seems credible to me.
