Dopo il film: La luce in piazza

Giulia and Marco discuss the same film they reviewed.

A me è piaciuto molto il finale.

What do you think of La luce in piazza? I liked the ending. When the projector breaks, Sara moves the screen outside and neighbours arrive with chairs. I think the scene shows their shared work well.

The images are beautiful, true. But I do not think all those neighbours would change their minds so quickly. At first they did not want to help Sara; soon they are all in the square. For me, an important step is missing.

I see your point, but I do not think everyone changed their mind. Remember the older woman by the door? She brings a photograph but stays outside the cinema and watches the others.

You are right; I had not noticed that detail. Maybe the scene is less simple than I thought. I like that the woman can take part in her own way, without agreeing with everything.

  • Giulia: Esatto.

Exactly. I was also struck by the young person who repairs the chairs. It matters that someone does that practical work: without chairs there would be no screening. But we know very little about him.

I agree. I am surprised the writers left his character so incomplete. He does much for the group but never says why the cinema matters to him.

  • Giulia: Forse volevano tenere l'attenzione su Sara.

Perhaps they wanted to keep the focus on Sara. I think a short conversation with the young man would have made the ending stronger and shown another reason to save the place.

Yes. I would no longer say that the ending is simply easy. The older woman changes my view of that scene, though I still want more time for the young man.

At the next film-club meeting we could ask what others saw. Someone may have noticed a detail we both missed.

  • Marco: Buona idea.

Good idea. We do not all need to agree, but each opinion should have a precise example. I will bring up the chair scene; you can mention the woman by the door.
