Italian telling the time exercises

A free A1 (beginner) Italian exercise on L’ora (telling the time): 60 multiple choice questions in 4 sets, from core practice to a mixed review, each with the answer and a short explanation. Or take a random round of 10. No account needed.

The rule in brief

To ask the time, say che ore sono? or che ora è? To answer, use sono le + the hour, because the hours are plural: sono le tre, sono le dieci. One o’clock is singular, so it is è l’una. Midday and midnight have no article and also take è: è mezzogiorno, è mezzanotte.

Add minutes after the hour with e: sono le tre e dieci. For the second half of the hour, count back from the next hour with meno: sono le sei meno dieci (5.50). A quarter is un quarto, half past is e mezza: sono le otto e un quarto, sono le nove e mezza, sono le undici meno un quarto (10.45).

To ask when something happens, say a che ora…? and answer with alle + the hour: alle sette, alle otto e mezza. For one o’clock it is all’una, and for midday a mezzogiorno. In everyday speech you can add di mattina, del pomeriggio or di sera to make the time clear.
