Italian verb essere exercises

The rule in brief

Essere ("to be") is irregular, so its six present-tense forms have to be learnt by heart. You use it to say who or what someone is (sono Marta, è medico), where they are from (sei di Roma?), how they are or what they are like (siamo stanchi, è simpatica) and where something is (le chiavi sono nella borsa).

Sono is both "I am" and "they are"; the subject or the context tells you which. È ("he/she/it is") always has an accent, which separates it from e ("and"). The same form is used for formal "you": Lei è di Milano, signora?

Subject pronouns are usually dropped, because the verb ending already shows the person: sono italiano means "I am Italian". To make a sentence negative, put non before the verb: non sono sposato. For a question, keep the same word order and change your intonation.
