The rule in brief

In Italian an adjective agrees in gender and number with the noun it describes, so its ending changes. Most adjectives usually come after the noun: una macchina rossa, i libri nuovi.

Adjectives in -o have four forms: rosso (masculine singular), rossa (feminine singular), rossi (masculine plural), rosse (feminine plural). Adjectives in -e have only two: verde for the singular and verdi for the plural, for both genders (un libro verde, una borsa verde, le borse verdi).

Spelling follows the same pattern as nouns. The feminine plural of an adjective in -ca adds an h (stanca, stanche). In the masculine plural, some adjectives in -co add an h (bianco, bianchi) and others soften to -ci (simpatico, simpatici).

When one adjective describes a mixed group of masculine and feminine nouns or people, it takes the masculine plural: Marco e Giulia sono simpatici. Only an all-female group takes the feminine plural: Anna e Sara sono italiane.
