Italian irregular verbs in the present exercises
A free A1 (beginner) Italian exercise on Verbi irregolari al presente (irregular verbs in the present): 60 fill in the blank questions in 4 sets, from core practice to a mixed review, each with the answer and a short explanation. Or take a random round of 10. No account needed.
The rule in brief
Some of the most common Italian verbs do not follow the regular -are, -ere, -ire patterns in the present tense, so their forms have to be memorised. The endings still look familiar (-o for io, -i for tu, -iamo for noi, -no for loro); it is the stem that changes.
Andare changes completely in four persons (vado, vai, va, vanno) but keeps andiamo and andate. Fare, dare and stare are short and similar (faccio, do, sto). Venire, uscire, dire and bere change their stem: vengo, esco, dico, bevo.
The modal verbs volere, potere and dovere ("to want", "can", "must") are usually followed by an infinitive: voglio uscire, puoi venire?, devo lavorare. Sapere means "to know" a fact or "to know how to": so nuotare, sai dov’è la stazione?
Useful everyday phrases use these verbs: come stai? (how are you?), fare colazione (to have breakfast), che lavoro fa? (what do you do for a living?).
| Verb | io | tu | lui / lei | noi | voi | loro |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| andare | vado | vai | va | andiamo | andate | vanno |

| venire | vengo | vieni | viene | veniamo | venite | vengono |
| uscire | esco | esci | esce | usciamo | uscite | escono |
| dire | dico | dici | dice | diciamo | dite | dicono |
| bere | bevo | bevi | beve | beviamo | bevete | bevono |
| stare | sto | stai | sta | stiamo | state | stanno |
| dare | do | dai | dà | diamo | date | danno |
| volere | voglio | vuoi | vuole | vogliamo | volete | vogliono |
| potere | posso | puoi | può | possiamo | potete | possono |
| dovere | devo | devi | deve | dobbiamo | dovete | devono |
| sapere | so | sai | sa | sappiamo | sapete | sanno |
