Italian present tense regular verbs exercises
A free A1 (beginner) Italian exercise on Presente indicativo (present tense): 60 fill in the blank questions in 4 sets, from core practice to a mixed review, each with the answer and a short explanation. Or take a random round of 10. No account needed.
The rule in brief
Italian verbs belong to three groups, according to the ending of the infinitive: -are (parlare), -ere (prendere) and -ire (dormire). To form the present tense, take off the ending and add the endings for the person. The table shows the full pattern.
Many -ire verbs add -isc- between the stem and the ending in four persons: io, tu, lui/lei and loro (capisco, capisci, capisce, capiscono). Noi and voi stay regular (capiamo, capite). Common -isc- verbs are capire, finire, preferire and pulire; dormire, partire, aprire and sentire do not take it.
Two spelling points. Verbs in -iare do not double the i: mangiare gives mangi and mangiamo. Verbs in -care and -gare add an h before i to keep the hard sound: cercare gives cerchi, pagare gives paghiamo.
The present tense covers "I speak", "I am speaking" and often "I will speak": domani parto means "I’m leaving tomorrow".
| Person | parlare | prendere | dormire | capire |
|---|---|---|---|---|
