Imperative with pronouns

Develop solving problems together through a focused practice itinerary.

Informal tu: attach pronouns

In an affirmative informal tu command, attach the pronoun group to the verb: manda + me + le becomes mandamele. With di', the consonant doubles in dimmelo. In a negative informal command, both positions are possible: «Non me le mandare» and «Non mandarmele». The pronouns still refer to the same people and things.

  • Mandamele oggi, per favore.· Send them to me today, please.
  • Dimmelo appena lo sai.· Tell it to me as soon as you know.
  • Non me le mandare ancora.· Do not send them to me yet.
  • Non mandarmele ancora.· Do not send them to me yet.

Formal Lei: put pronouns before the verb

A formal Lei request uses the present subjunctive form of the verb. Its short pronouns come before that verb, not attached to it: «Me le mandi», «Glielo dica». Use this form with a service agent or customer you address formally. Compare the informal «Mandamele» with the formal «Me le mandi».

  • Me le mandi per email, per favore.· Please send them to me by email.
  • Glielo dica appena ha una risposta.· Please tell it to him or her when you have an answer.
  • Me lo spieghi con calma, per favore.· Please explain it to me calmly.
  • Non me le mandi ancora, grazie.· Please do not send them to me yet.
