Noun gender and articles

Many nouns in -o are masculine and many nouns in -a are feminine. Nouns in -e can have either gender. The ending is a useful clue, not a complete rule.

Use il before most masculine consonants, lo before z or s + consonant, and l’ before a vowel. Use la before a feminine consonant and l’ before a feminine vowel. The indefinite forms are un, uno, una, and un’. Masculine un never takes an apostrophe.

  • lo studente· the male student
  • l’amico· the male friend
