Objects, people, colours and basic qualities

Build the core word and phrase bank for people and things.

Core words

Learn each object with its article. Colour adjectives normally follow the noun and agree with it. Some colours, such as blu, do not change.

Use grande and piccolo for size, nuovo and vecchio for condition or age, and bello for a positive description.

  • il tavolo· the table
  • la sedia· the chair
  • la porta· the door
  • la finestra· the window
  • il libro· the book
  • la penna· the pen

Useful chunks

Learn nouns with their articles and learn verbs inside a complete phrase. Say each Italian item aloud, cover the English, and retrieve the meaning.

  • lo zaino· the backpack
  • il telefono· the telephone
  • rosso / rossa· red
  • nero / nera· black
  • grande / piccolo· large / small
  • nuovo / vecchio· new / old

People and their qualities

Learn a person noun with its article, just as you learn an object noun. A person can be one or more than one. Descriptive adjectives change with the person: «uno studente simpatico», «una studentessa simpatica», «due studenti simpatici», «due studentesse simpatiche». Use «è» for one person and «sono» for several people.

  • lo studente / la studentessa· the male student / the female student
  • l’amico / l’amica· the male friend / the female friend
  • un ragazzo alto / una ragazza alta· a tall boy / a tall girl
  • Sono due persone simpatiche.· They are two friendly people.
