The rule in brief

The condizionale presente translates English would. It makes requests polite (vorrei un caffè, potrebbe aiutarmi?), gives advice (dovresti riposare), expresses wishes (mi piacerebbe viaggiare) and describes what would happen in an imagined situation (al posto tuo, accetterei).

To form it, take the infinitive, drop the final -e and add -ei, -esti, -ebbe, -emmo, -este, -ebbero. Verbs in -are change the a of the stem to e: parlare → parlerei. Verbs in -care and -gare add h to keep the hard sound: cercherei, pagherei.

Many common verbs have a shortened or irregular stem. The endings stay the same, so once you know the stem the rest follows. Be careful with the double m in noi (andremmo) and the double b in loro (andrebbero): they are what distinguish the conditional from the future (andremo, andranno).
