The rule in brief

To say more … than or less … than, use più or meno, then di before a noun or pronoun: Milano è più grande di Bologna, Anna è più alta di me. Di combines with the article: più comodo dell’aereo.

Use che instead of di when you compare two things of the same kind within one subject: two adjectives (più bello che utile), two verbs (è più facile leggere che scrivere), two quantities (più caffè che tè), or two phrases that begin with a preposition (meglio in treno che in macchina).

For equality, use (così) … come or (tanto) … quanto: è alta come me, è tanto bravo quanto simpatico. Così and tanto are often left out.

Buono, cattivo, grande and piccolo also have special forms: migliore, peggiore, maggiore, minore. These are adjectives and describe nouns. Meglio and peggio are adverbs: they modify verbs, as in canta meglio di me.
