Pragmatics mission

Repair a public message, then write a separate piece of satire.

Stage one: repair a flawed pre-opening memo

You are the editor of a Borgofaro pre-opening message. The fictional draft says: «La lettura ha già messo radici. I visitatori sono entusiasti. Silvio ha spostato la panchina. Il quaderno blu è già in mostra». None of those four claims is supported. Write a 180–220-word Italian annotation that identifies each unsupported implication and its safer replacement. Then draft a 100–130-word plain public notice: the former waiting room is due to open tomorrow as a reading room; shelves occupy the old counter position; the kept bench is by the window, but its mover is unknown; Marta has made an entrance panel; the notebook is in a box and display is undecided. Do not invent attendance, approval, official rules or a display date.

  • «Già» anticipa un uso che non è stato osservato.· “Already” predicts use that has not been observed.
  • L’apertura è prevista per domani.· The opening is planned for tomorrow.
  • La panchina è vicino alla finestra; non sappiamo chi l’ha spostata.· The bench is by the window; we do not know who moved it.
  • Il quaderno resta nella scatola; l’esposizione non è decisa.· The notebook remains in its box; display is undecided.

Stage two: handle meaning and humour without losing the facts

Record a three-minute editorial role-play, alone with two voices or with a partner. Sofia asks Leo politely to remove «già»; Leo first answers the literal question; Sofia makes the needed change explicit. Nadia then says «Interessante» about the replacement, and Leo checks whether that means approval or a remaining concern. State the agreed title aloud. Next write 220–280 words of Italian satire marked «SATIRA — TESTO DI FINZIONE». Target premature claims, not people. Include one ironic compliment and one understatement, with enough context to interpret them. Finish with a 90-word self-check: identify the implied request, the failed uptake, the direct repair, the irony’s target and the point where the satire returns to real facts. If any reader could take the satire for an official notice, revise the label and ending.

  • Potremmo forse togliere «già»?· Could we perhaps remove “already”?
  • Intendo: cancelliamolo ora; non abbiamo ancora dati.· I mean: remove it now; we have no data yet.
  • «Interessante» è un assenso o una riserva?· Does “interesting” mean agreement or a concern?
  • La satira inventa un ufficio, ma non inventa risultati reali.· The satire invents an office but not real results.
