Manage delicate interaction
Correct a headline and a rumour without hiding the facts.
Role-play: an editor and a volunteer
Work in pairs, or record both parts separately. It is the day before the Borgofaro reading room opens. You are Sofia, the editor. Leo has drafted «La lettura ha già messo radici» and «I visitatori sono entusiasti». Take 90 seconds to prepare, then hold a three-minute discussion. First recognise his wish for a welcoming title; then ask politely for a revision. If Leo answers only the literal question «Possiamo togliere già?», state the needed change directly and explain that no visitor result exists yet. Leo must offer one vivid but verifiable replacement and repeat the agreed facts. Do not invent visitor comments.
- Capisco perché vuoi un titolo invitante.· I see why you want an inviting headline.
- Potremmo forse togliere «già»?· Could we perhaps remove “already”?
- Intendo: togliamolo, perché la sala non ha ancora aperto.· I mean: let us remove it, because the room has not opened yet.
- Possiamo annunciare l’apertura prevista per domani.· We can announce the opening planned for tomorrow.
Role-play: a resident asks about the notebook
Now play Sofia with Nadia, a resident who has heard that the blue notebook is already on display. Prepare for 60 seconds and speak for two minutes. Ask what Nadia heard; do not label her careless. Explain that Silvio found the notebook, Marta keeps it in a box for now, and the display decision is open. If Nadia says «Interessante», ask whether she agrees with your wording or still has a concern. Close with a two-sentence public message that does not use irony. Record or repeat both role-plays, then check: Was each correction factual, respectful and understood by the other person? Did you move from an indirect hint to a direct correction when needed?
- Mi dici quale notizia hai sentito?· Can you tell me what you heard?
- Per ora il quaderno è nella scatola.· For now the notebook is in its box.
- Quando dici «interessante», hai ancora una riserva?· When you say “interesting”, do you still have a concern?
- Non è stata presa una decisione sull’esposizione.· No decision has been made about display.
