What did the speaker really mean?
Infer a possible intention, then check it with context.
A delicate fictional editing meeting
Sofia, Leo and Nadia prepare public copy for the fictional Borgofaro reading room, due to open tomorrow. The bench was kept and moved near the window; Marta wrote an entrance panel; the blue notebook remains in a box while display is considered. There are no visitor reactions yet. Leo proposes «Un successo che ha già messo radici». Nadia asks «Potremmo forse dire che la sala non ha ancora aperto?». Literally this is a question about possibility; in this meeting it can also be a polite request to correct the headline. Treat the intended meaning as an inference supported by context, not a hidden fact known with certainty.
- Potremmo dire che la sala non ha ancora aperto?· Could we say that the room has not yet opened?
- La domanda può funzionare come una richiesta cortese.· The question can function as a polite request.
- Il titolo afferma un successo non ancora osservato.· The headline asserts a success not yet observed.
- Non sappiamo con certezza ogni intenzione del parlante.· We do not know every intention of the speaker with certainty.
Use the next turn as evidence
An utterance gets much of its force from what follows. If Leo answers «Hai ragione, cambio il titolo», he treats Nadia’s question as an editorial request. If he answers only «Sì, siamo capaci di dirlo», he has answered the literal question but missed the likely action. A phrase such as «Interessante...» could signal genuine interest or polite reservation; tone and next turns matter. When accuracy is urgent, do not rely on hints alone: say «Il quaderno non è in mostra; dobbiamo correggere la frase». Pragmatic skill includes knowing when to make the point explicit.
- Hai ragione, cambio il titolo.· You are right; I will change the headline.
- «Interessante...» non basta da solo a provare ironia.· “Interesting...” alone does not prove irony.
- Il quaderno non è in mostra: correggiamo la frase.· The notebook is not on display: let us correct the sentence.
- La risposta successiva aiuta a interpretare la richiesta.· The next reply helps interpret the request.
