La stanza cambia voce

Original fictional condensed performance script.

Marta entered the old waiting room while rain struck the new windows. The wooden bench remained, but someone had moved it beside the window. Tomorrow the room would receive readers; today she had to write the entrance panel.

As a child she had helped her father, the clerk, record forgotten objects in the blue notebook. A red glove, an umbrella, a book without a cover: the notebook did not say who had been sad or who returned to search.

I did not think you would arrive so early. I found something behind the old timetable cupboard when we cleared the wall.

Silvio put a box on the table. Inside was the blue notebook. Marta looked at the fold in its cover. Was it really her father’s? Only the first page, with dates drawn in pencil, let her recognise it.

I did not remember writing on the last free page too. I recognise my handwriting here among my father’s notes.

On the last free page Marta had written, before the station closed: “Do not throw away the bench.” As a girl she believed keeping that object was enough to retain the room. Now the bench had been saved and also moved.

The bench was fine at the back, but there is more light for reading near the window.

Marta read the first panel draft: “Time has stood still here.” She looked at the new windows and the shelves where the counter had been. Had time really stood still? She crossed out the sentence with one stroke.

I cannot write that nothing changed. And I do not want to pretend there was never a station here.

The second draft said nothing about trains. Marta put it away. On the back of a sheet she wrote that people had waited for trains there, that from tomorrow the room would receive readers, and that the bench had been kept and moved near the window.

  • Silvio: E il quaderno? Lo mettiamo in mostra insieme al pannello?

And the notebook? Shall we display it with the panel?

For now it stays in the box. First I want to know how to keep pages that also concern other people’s objects.

Silvio nodded. Marta did not assign him a thought he had not voiced. She let the ink dry and looked at the bench in the light. It was not a promise of return. Perhaps it was enough to say where one could enter.

Read the complete performance script

This original fictional script is a condensed adaptation of the story. The narrator reads in a steady third-person voice; Marta and Silvio have distinct but restrained voices. When you read it aloud, do not turn a narrator’s free-indirect question into a quoted line spoken by Marta. First locate the event sequence; then mark where rain and room details provide background, and where a childhood memory moves earlier.

  • La narratrice dice: «Marta entrò».· The narrator says: “Marta entered.”
  • Silvio parla solo nelle battute attribuite a lui.· Silvio speaks only in lines assigned to him.
  • «Era davvero quello?» resta nella voce narrante.· “Was it really that one?” stays in the narrator’s voice.
  • Una pausa può separare il ricordo dalla scena presente.· A pause can separate the memory from the current scene.

Check what performance can and cannot add

The performer may slow down before Marta crosses out «Qui il tempo si è fermato», but cannot make Silvio say he moved the bench: the story does not say that. Notice how Marta’s direct reply «Per ora resta nella scatola» differs from the narrator’s later tentative «Forse bastava...». Compare both with the full prose reading and identify one detail the condensed script omits. Performance changes pacing and emphasis, not the established events or whose thought a sentence can represent.

  • Marta cancellò la frase sulla quiete del tempo.· Marta crossed out the sentence about time standing still.
  • Silvio non dichiara di aver spostato la panchina.· Silvio does not say he moved the bench.
For now it stays in the box” is direct speech.
  • La lettura espressiva non aggiunge eventi al racconto.· Expressive reading does not add events to the story.
