Perform and analyse

Read one scene aloud and justify three performance choices.

Perform for a literary reading group

You are the reader at a fictional Borgofaro literary evening. Select the part of the complete story from Silvio’s arrival to Marta crossing out «Qui il tempo si è fermato». Prepare a two-minute reading in Italian for adults who have not seen the text. Mark a pause before the memory of the station closing; keep the narrator’s questions in the narrator’s voice; give direct dialogue a distinct, restrained sound. Record yourself if possible. Do not add a line claiming Silvio moved the bench or knows Marta’s thoughts. Those facts are not in the story.

  • Silvio posò la scatola sul tavolo.· Silvio put the box on the table.
  • Era davvero il quaderno di suo padre?· Was it really her father’s notebook?
  • Da ragazza Marta aveva chiesto di salvare la panchina.· As a girl Marta had asked for the bench to be saved.
  • Marta cancellò la prima frase del pannello.· Marta crossed out the first panel sentence.

Give a critical commentary

After the reading, give a 90-second Italian commentary to the same group. Explain three choices: why the imperfect around the rain stays unhurried, why the pluperfect childhood memory needs a transition, and why the free-indirect question should sound like Marta’s uncertainty without becoming a direct quotation. Cite one exact short phrase from the story for each point. End by explaining why the moved bench can suggest change without forcing one fixed symbol. Invite one question and answer it with textual evidence.

  • L’imperfetto distende lo sfondo della scena.· The imperfect stretches the scene’s background.
  • Il trapassato colloca il ricordo prima dell’ingresso.· The pluperfect places the memory before the entrance.
  • La domanda può appartenere a Marta senza essere citata.· The question can belong to Marta without quotation.
  • La panchina suggerisce continuità e mutamento.· The bench suggests continuity and change.
