Implication and politeness
Read a possible request without hiding the necessary correction.
Separate sentence form from conversational action
«Potremmo togliere “già” dal titolo?» has interrogative form and conditional «potremmo». In an editing meeting, it can perform a polite request: remove «già», because the room has not opened. «Mi chiedevo se potessimo precisare...» uses imperfect «chiedevo» and subjunctive «potessimo» to make the approach less abrupt. Neither form proves that Leo must agree. Infer the action from shared work and the next turn; do not treat an indirect request as a fixed secret code. If a public notice falsely says the notebook is displayed, the repair must become explicit before publication.
- Potremmo togliere «già» dal titolo?· Could we remove “already” from the headline?
- Mi chiedevo se potessimo precisare lo stato del quaderno.· I wondered if we could clarify the notebook’s status.
- Sì, tolgo «già» perché la sala non ha aperto.· Yes, I will remove “already” because the room has not opened.
- Il quaderno non è esposto: questa frase va corretta.· The notebook is not displayed: this sentence must be corrected.
Use mitigation, then state the point
A useful delicate correction can have three parts: acknowledge a legitimate aim, identify the specific wording problem, offer a factual replacement. «Capisco che tu voglia un titolo vivace; “successo” però anticipa una valutazione. Possiamo dire che la sala aprirà domani». This is not evasive because the wrong term and replacement are explicit. «Non proprio» alone is too thin if the text is going public; explain which claim is wrong. Politeness depends on relationship, audience and purpose, not only the conditional. In a safety-critical notice, clarity takes priority over maintaining an elegant hint.
- Capisco l’obiettivo, ma «successo» anticipa una valutazione.· I understand the aim, but “success” pre-empts an evaluation.
- Possiamo scrivere: «La sala aprirà domani».· We can write: “The room will open tomorrow.”
- «Non proprio» richiede una spiegazione successiva.· “Not exactly” needs a following explanation.
- La cortesia non deve cancellare la correzione.· Politeness must not erase the correction.
