Formal, neutral and informal adaptation

Hold the factual message steady while changing address and tone.

Three audiences, one exhibition

Write to a friend with tu and second-person verbs; write to an unfamiliar director with courtesy Lei and third-person singular verbs. A neutral public notice can avoid direct personal address. These are context choices, not regional labels. Keep the same facts in each version: the fictional exhibition is on Saturday and presents food-name variants; it does not serve food. Formality does not require inflated words or unsupported promises.

  • Amica: «Ti va di visitare la mostra sabato?»· Friend: “Would you like to visit the exhibition on Saturday?”
  • Direttrice: «La invitiamo a visitare la mostra sabato».· Director: “We invite you to visit the exhibition on Saturday.”
  • Avviso: «La mostra sulle varianti alimentari apre sabato».· Notice: “The exhibition on food-name variants opens Saturday.”
  • Non promettiamo degustazioni se non sono previste.· We do not promise tastings if none are planned.

Check pronouns and information

With courtesy Lei, «La invitiamo» uses a direct-object pronoun and «Le scriviamo» an indirect-object pronoun. If the director is the subject, use a third-person singular verb: «Può visitare la mostra». In informal speech, «Ti scrivo» and «Puoi visitare» follow tu. A neutral caption names anguria/cocomero or arancina/arancino with brief glosses. It need not switch to a formal address merely because a local word appears.

  • Le scriviamo per presentare la mostra.· We are writing to you to present the exhibition.
  • Può visitarla sabato.· You can visit it on Saturday (formal).
  • Ti scrivo per raccontarti della mostra.· I am writing to tell you about the exhibition (informal).
  • Il cartello spiega «arancina» e «arancino» senza rivolgersi a una persona.· The label explains “arancina” and “arancino” without addressing a person.
