Elena racconta una decisione
- Paolo: Elena, nel 2019 quale decisione dovevate prendere?
Elena, what decision did you have to make in 2019?
We had €40,000 for one archive project.
- Paolo: Quali proposte erano sul tavolo?
Which proposals were on the table?
A €38,000 digital inventory and a €35,000 interview pilot.
- Paolo: Perché avete scelto l’inventario?
Why did you choose the inventory?
Some photographs had no date and the records were hard to use. We feared losing information.
- Paolo: La decisione fu solo tua?
Was the decision yours alone?
- Elena: No. Il consiglio approvò il piano.
No. The council approved the plan. I proposed it, but responsibility was shared.
- Paolo: Che cosa fu completato?
What was completed?
- Elena: L’inventario fu completato nel 2020. Le interviste non furono avviate.
The inventory was completed in 2020. The interviews were not started.
- Paolo: Oggi hai un rimpianto?
Do you have a regret today?
- Elena: Sì. Avrei dovuto consultare prima i volontari.
Yes. I should have consulted the volunteers earlier. We might have understood better which stories we risked missing.
One of them, Antonio, died in 2022. If you had chosen the interviews, would you have recorded him?
We could have invited him, but I do not know if he would have agreed. I cannot present a conversation that never happened as certain.
A colleague proposed splitting the fund. Would that have been possible?
Avremmo dovuto chiederli prima.
Perhaps, but no one had prepared quotes for two smaller projects. We should have requested them first.
- Paolo: Consideri l’inventario un errore?
Do you consider the inventory a mistake?
- Elena: No. I documenti si trovano meglio.
No. The documents are easier to find. The problem was failing to discuss the risk of losing testimony early enough.
- Paolo: Che cosa proponi adesso?
What do you propose now?
A small programme of future interviews, with new quotes and clear consent from each participant.
What is the lesson for listeners?
Let us separate facts from outcomes we imagine. Regret can help us decide better, but it does not change the past.
First pass: what happened?
Listen to the full interview first, then use the transcript to check details. Identify the 2019 decision, the documented 2020 outcome, and Elena’s later regret. The archive and people are fictional.
