Discuss alternative outcomes
Discuss a past archive choice without inventing certainty.
Two-minute discussion with a colleague
You are an archive worker preparing a public meeting with a colleague. Explain Elena’s fictional 2019 decision in two minutes: €40,000 covered one project, the €38,000 inventory was chosen, and the €35,000 interview pilot did not start. State one documented benefit of the inventory, one process regret, and one possible alternative. Use a type 3 condition and a past conditional. Do not claim Antonio certainly would have agreed to an interview.
- Nel 2019 il consiglio scelse l’inventario.· In 2019 the council chose the inventory.
- L’inventario rese i documenti più facili da trovare.· The inventory made the documents easier to find.
- Avremmo dovuto consultare prima i volontari.· We should have consulted the volunteers earlier.
- Se avessimo scelto il progetto pilota, avremmo potuto invitare Antonio.· If we had chosen the pilot, we could have invited Antonio.
Answer a difficult question
Your colleague asks: “Would Antonio have told us everything?” Reply for 30 seconds. Acknowledge that consent and answers are unknown, then name one better procedure for future decisions. Repeat with fewer notes. Check the difference between a past fact, a regret, and a hypothetical result.
- Non sappiamo se Antonio avrebbe accettato.· We do not know whether Antonio would have agreed.
- Non possiamo inventare ciò che avrebbe raccontato.· We cannot invent what he would have told us.
- Se avessimo chiesto il suo parere, avremmo potuto avere più informazioni.· If we had asked his view, we might have had more information.
- La prossima volta chiederemo consenso e preventivi prima di scegliere.· Next time we will ask for consent and quotes before choosing.
