Regret, responsibility and consequence

Name the difference between a past fact and a missed chance.

Words for a careful account

Use il rimpianto for regret, la responsabilità for responsibility, la conseguenza for consequence, and la testimonianza for testimony. A personal regret does not prove sole responsibility. In this case Elena proposed the inventory, but the archive council approved it.

  • Elena espresse un rimpianto per la consultazione tardiva.· Elena expressed regret about late consultation.
  • La responsabilità della decisione era condivisa.· Responsibility for the decision was shared.
  • La conseguenza certa fu un inventario completato.· The certain consequence was a completed inventory.
  • Nessuna testimonianza di Antonio fu registrata.· No testimony from Antonio was recorded.

Words for evidence and uncertainty

Use un preventivo for a quote, il consenso for consent, una possibilità for a possibility, and una certezza for certainty. The original quotes did not describe two smaller projects. A counterfactual claim about an interview needs words such as avrebbe potuto, not a claim of certain success.

  • Un nuovo preventivo avrebbe chiarito il costo di un progetto ridotto.· A new quote would have clarified the cost of a smaller project.
  • Il consenso dei partecipanti non si può presumere.· Participant consent cannot be assumed.
  • Un’intervista sarebbe stata una possibilità, non una certezza.· An interview would have been a possibility, not a certainty.
  • Distinguiamo le prove dalle ipotesi.· Let us distinguish evidence from hypotheses.
