Formal imperative and pronouns

The formal singular imperative uses present-subjunctive forms: parli, prenda, finisca. Negative formal commands use non plus the same form. Object and reflexive pronouns normally come before the formal imperative, unlike the positive informal imperative, where they attach to the verb.

  • Prenda questa compressa.· Take this tablet. (formal)
  • Beva molta acqua.· Drink plenty of water. (formal)
  • Finisca il trattamento.· Finish the treatment. (formal)
  • Non usi questo prodotto.· Do not use this product. (formal)

Form, meaning, and contrast

Compare the second set of models. Identify the contrast in meaning, then check verb form, agreement, pronoun position, and the logical relation before you produce a new sentence.

  • Lo prenda dopo i pasti.· Take it after meals. (formal)
  • Mi dica dove sente dolore.· Tell me where you feel pain. (formal)
  • Si sieda, per favore.· Sit down, please. (formal)
  • Non si preoccupi.· Do not worry. (formal)
