Define a term, then state its scope and limit.
Build a definition with class and distinguishing feature
A useful specialist definition identifies a general class and a distinguishing feature. «Per protocollo di rilevazione si intende il piano che specifica che cosa si conta, quando e con quale metodo» gives a class, piano, then its function. «Per commento volontario si intende un messaggio inviato senza selezione dei rispondenti» distinguishes it from a probability sample. In «per X si intende Y», the phrase after «per» names the term being defined; the clause after «si intende» supplies its meaning. A definition does not certify that the planned action has happened. In public writing, follow the term with one ordinary-language example.
- Per protocollo si intende un piano di raccolta dei dati.· A protocol means a plan for collecting data.
- Il preventivo è una stima dei costi, non una spesa effettuata.· An estimate is a projected cost, not an expense already incurred.
- Una delibera è una decisione formale del comitato.· A resolution is a formal committee decision.
- Il commento volontario proviene da chi decide di rispondere.· A voluntary comment comes from someone who chooses to respond.
Qualify an expert claim explicitly
A qualification sets the domain in which a statement is supported. «Limitatamente ai diciotto commenti ricevuti, undici sono favorevoli» states the denominator; it does not assert town-wide support. «Sulla base del rapporto, la spesa è stimata in novecento euro» names the source and status of the figure. «Qualora la prova venga autorizzata» keeps the future observation conditional. Avoid the unqualified sentence «la prova dimostra un effetto duraturo»: there is no pilot measurement, and even a later entry count alone would not prove lasting causation. Place the limit close to the claim so a reader cannot miss it.

- Sulla base del preventivo, il costo è stimato in novecento euro.· Based on the estimate, the projected cost is nine hundred euros.
- Qualora la prova sia autorizzata, si conteranno gli ingressi.· If the trial is authorised, entries will be counted.
- Il conteggio descriverebbe l’uso, non dimostrerebbe da solo una causa.· The count would describe use, not by itself prove a cause.
