Editing and text architecture

Name the paragraph’s job before changing a mark.

A vocabulary for the editing decision

Use «attacco» for the opening, «snodo» for a turn in the argument, «inciso» for an inserted aside, «ripresa» for a return to a known topic, and «chiusa» for the ending. In the Borgofaro article, the attacco should say what will open and when. The next paragraph can explain what changed in the room. A later snodo can move from furniture to Marta’s panel, and the chiusa can state what remains undecided about the notebook. These names describe functions, not fixed paragraph lengths.

  • L’attacco annuncia l’apertura prevista per domani.· The opening announces the opening planned for tomorrow.
  • Lo snodo passa dalla stanza al pannello di Marta.· The turn moves from the room to Marta’s panel.
  • L’inciso aggiunge un dettaglio senza cambiare la tesi.· The aside adds a detail without changing the claim.
  • La chiusa lascia visibile la decisione ancora aperta.· The ending keeps the pending decision visible.

Build a route for the reader

«Tema» is what a sentence starts from; «rema» is the new information it adds. Progression is easier when a new detail becomes the next sentence’s starting point: «La panchina è stata spostata vicino alla finestra. Quella nuova posizione offre più luce». A jump from the bench to the notebook needs a bridge that says why both matter to the article: one is visible in the room, the other remains in a box. Use «ripresa» to return to a noun when a pronoun would be ambiguous. A heading or paragraph break should mark a real change of focus, not merely decorate the page.

  • La panchina è vicina alla finestra. Quella posizione dà più luce.· The bench is near the window. That position gives more light.
  • Il mobile è visibile; il quaderno, invece, resta nella scatola.· The piece of furniture is visible; the notebook, by contrast, stays in its box.
  • Ripeto «quaderno» se «lo» potrebbe indicare anche il pannello.· I repeat “notebook” if “it” might also mean the panel.
  • Il cambio di paragrafo segnala un nuovo compito informativo.· The paragraph break signals a new information task.
