Choose marks for their logical work and controlled pace.

Mark explanation, contrast and completion

In the Borgofaro article, a colon can introduce an explanation: «La sala cambia funzione: diventerà uno spazio di lettura». A semicolon can join two related but syntactically complete claims: «La panchina è rimasta; il banco dei biglietti è scomparso». A full stop gives a claim its own weight: «Il quaderno non sarà esposto domani. La decisione è ancora aperta». None of these marks is merely a breathing instruction. If the relation is not clear, write the connector or split the sentence. Do not place a lone comma between an ordinary subject and its verb: «Il quaderno resta nella scatola», not «Il quaderno, resta nella scatola».

  • La sala cambia funzione: diventerà uno spazio di lettura.· The room changes use: it will become a reading space.
  • La panchina resta; il banco dei biglietti è scomparso.· The bench remains; the ticket counter has gone.
  • Il quaderno resta nella scatola. L’esposizione non è decisa.· The notebook stays in the box. Display has not been decided.
  • Il quaderno resta nella scatola.· The notebook stays in the box.

Bound an aside and protect quoted words

An inserted phrase can be enclosed by a pair of dashes or parentheses. Use the pair consistently, and check that the main sentence still reads when the aside is removed: «La panchina — conservata durante i lavori — ora è vicino alla finestra». Parentheses may make an ancillary detail quieter; dashes can give it more prominence. Quotation marks identify Marta’s panel wording, not the editor’s paraphrase. Avoid an exclamation mark just to simulate importance. Punctuation should show the relation among facts and the editorial voice that presents them.

  • La panchina — conservata durante i lavori — è vicino alla finestra.· The bench—kept during the work—is near the window.
  • Il quaderno (ancora nella scatola) non è in mostra.· The notebook (still in the box) is not on display.
  • Marta cancellò «Qui il tempo si è fermato».· Marta crossed out “Time has stood still here.”
  • Il segno grafico non sostituisce una prova.· A punctuation mark does not replace evidence.
