Literary tense choices

Place foreground action, background and earlier memory on one timeline.

Use tense to organise narrative prominence

In this literary frame, passato remoto presents bounded foreground actions: Marta «entrò», «aprì» and «lesse». Imperfetto gives the ongoing background or a repeated past habit: «pioveva», «il padre annotava». Trapassato prossimo locates a completed event before the current past scene: «Marta aveva scritto nel quaderno da bambina». The remote past does not mean the event is more important in real life; it moves the chosen story forward. These are useful narrative functions, not a ban on other past-tense styles. On a timeline, put childhood writing before the day Marta enters the room; place rain across that day.

  • Marta entrò e aprì il quaderno.· Marta entered and opened the notebook.
  • Fuori pioveva mentre lei leggeva.· Outside it was raining while she was reading.
  • Da bambina Marta aveva annotato gli oggetti smarriti.· As a child Marta had recorded lost objects.
  • Suo padre annotava spesso i ritrovamenti.· Her father often recorded found objects.

Repair a broken timeline deliberately

Compare «Marta aprì il quaderno che aveva riempito anni prima» with «Marta aprì il quaderno che riempì anni prima». The first clearly treats filling as anterior to the opening; the second can work in another narrative arrangement, but weakens the immediate backward cue here. Avoid shifting to present perfect merely because the event feels recent to Marta; that choice changes the narrative frame. In the panel she writes, quotation marks may introduce another time centre: «Da domani questa stanza accoglierà lettori». The future belongs to the panel’s moment, not to the narrator’s past sequence.

  • Marta aprì il quaderno che aveva riempito anni prima.· Marta opened the notebook she had filled years earlier.
  • La stanza era silenziosa quando Silvio bussò.· The room was quiet when Silvio knocked.
  • Silvio consegnò il quaderno che aveva trovato nell’armadio.· Silvio handed over the notebook he had found in the cupboard.
  • Sul cartello Marta scrisse: «Da domani si leggerà qui».· On the sign Marta wrote: “From tomorrow people will read here.”
