Narrative voice and free indirect style
Recognise a character’s thought inside third-person narration.
Compare three ways to report one thought
Direct thought can be marked as «Marta pensò: “È davvero la stessa stanza?”». Indirect thought becomes «Marta si chiese se fosse davvero la stessa stanza». A free-indirect version can read «Marta guardò la stanza. Era davvero la stessa?». There is no reporting clause or quotation in the last question; third-person past narration remains, while the question and «davvero» can carry Marta’s doubt. Context identifies the viewpoint. A question alone does not prove free indirect style: it could also be a narrator’s rhetorical question. Check who could know or feel the words and what immediately precedes them.
- Marta pensò: «È davvero la stessa stanza?»· Marta thought: “Is it really the same room?”
- Marta si chiese se fosse davvero la stessa stanza.· Marta wondered whether it really was the same room.
- Marta guardò la stanza. Era davvero la stessa?· Marta looked at the room. Was it really the same?
- Il dubbio può appartenere a Marta senza virgolette.· The doubt can belong to Marta without quotation marks.
Do not confuse focalisation with omniscience
Keep the narrator close to Marta while Silvio hands her the notebook. «Silvio sorrise» is observable; «Silvio era felice di averla ingannata» would claim access to his unreported thought. You may instead write «Marta interpretò il sorriso come un invito», which assigns the inference to her. Free indirect style blends the character’s tone with the narrator’s grammatical frame; it does not license unsupported facts. In a revision, underline all evaluations such as «finalmente», «assurdo» and «davvero» and ask whose judgement each conveys.
- Silvio sorrise e le porse il quaderno.· Silvio smiled and handed her the notebook.
- Marta prese quel sorriso per un invito.· Marta took that smile as an invitation.
- Finalmente il quaderno era tornato: ma perché proprio ora?· At last the notebook had returned—but why just now?
- Il narratore non riferisce un pensiero segreto di Silvio.· The narrator does not report a secret thought of Silvio.
