Literary criticism and imagery
Describe what an image does before naming a symbol.
Use critical terms with evidence
«Voce narrante» is the source of the telling; «focalizzazione» is the route through which information is selected; «immagine» is a concrete representation; «motivo» is a repeated element; «scarto temporale» is a move away from the current narrative moment. In the Borgofaro story, the bench, window and blue notebook are images. The notebook can become a motif if the story returns to it. Do not call every object a symbol before showing how it shapes Marta’s choice. A strong comment cites a phrase and explains its function.
- La voce narrante usa la terza persona.· The narrative voice uses third person.
- La focalizzazione resta vicina a Marta.· The viewpoint remains close to Marta.
- Il quaderno blu torna in più momenti del racconto.· The blue notebook returns at several points in the story.
- La panchina spostata rende visibile il cambiamento.· The moved bench makes change visible.
Distinguish description from interpretation
An image can support more than one reading. «Il vetro tratteneva la pioggia» describes a surface; an interpretation might connect that barrier to Marta’s distance from the past. The interpretation is not a fact about the glass. Use verbs such as «suggerisce», «mette in contrasto» and «può evocare» when evidence supports a reading but does not force it. To discuss time, distinguish analepsis—the return to an earlier episode—from a simple description of the present room. When Marta remembers writing in the notebook at twelve, the narrative moves backward.
- La pioggia sul vetro può evocare una distanza.· Rain on the glass may evoke a distance.
- L’immagine non prova da sola un significato unico.· The image does not by itself prove one meaning.
- Il ricordo di Marta crea uno scarto temporale.· Marta’s memory creates a shift in time.
- La panchina conservata e spostata mette in contrasto continuità e mutamento.· The kept but moved bench contrasts continuity and change.
