Prefixes, suffixes and derivation

Explain how a word is built without assuming its form proves a fact.

Prefixes change meaning, not evidence

Word formation can add a prefix to an established base: rileggere means read again; riscrivere means write again; impossibile negates possibile; irregolare negates regolare. Irreparabile means not repairable, but do not build its spelling mechanically from modern riparabile: established forms must be checked. In the novel, Nico’s adjective remains his judgment, not an inspection result. The prefix ri- can express repetition or return, but its effect depends on the verb.

  • Leggere → rileggere: leggere di nuovo.· To read → to reread: read again.
  • Scrivere → riscrivere: scrivere di nuovo o in modo diverso.· To write → to rewrite: write again or differently.
  • Possibile → impossibile: non possibile.· Possible → impossible: not possible.
  • Regolare → irregolare: non regolare.· Regular → irregular: not regular.
  • Irreparabile significa che non si può riparare.· Irreparable means that it cannot be repaired.

Suffixes can change word class or evaluation

Responsabile becomes responsabilità: the adjective becomes a noun. Efficace becomes efficacia: an adjective becomes a noun for its quality. Riparare becomes riparazione: the verb becomes a noun for the action or result. These pairs have different grammar and collocations. An altered suffix is different: panchina → panchinetta or panchinaccia keeps a noun but adds a speaker’s attitude in context. Do not teach “sostenere → sostenibile” as a simple one-step translation; sostenibile has an established meaning such as supportable or sustainable, and usage must be checked in its own context.

  • Responsabile → responsabilità.· Responsible → responsibility.
  • Efficace → efficacia.· Effective → effectiveness.
  • Riparare → riparazione.· To repair → repair.
  • Panchina → panchinetta: nome alterato, non una nuova prova.· Bench → little bench: an altered noun, not new evidence.
