Near-synonyms are not interchangeable
In La panchina blu, riparare means making the bench usable again; restaurare focuses on conserving existing material or appearance; sostituire means putting another bench in its place. No character has a technical inspection result, so irreparabile is Nico’s judgment, not a documented condition. A review should name the speaker and the reason a word matters. Place each word in a sentence, not a one-to-one glossary.
- Ada propone di riparare la panchina.· Ada proposes repairing the bench.
- Restaurare richiederebbe di conservarne alcuni elementi.· Restoring it would require keeping some of its elements.
- Sostituirla significherebbe mettere un’altra panchina al suo posto.· Replacing it would mean putting another bench in its place.
- Nico la definisce «irreparabile», ma manca un’ispezione.· Nico calls it “beyond repair,” but there is no inspection.
Build natural collocations
Italian pairs words in habitual ways: prendere una decisione, formulare una proposta, esprimere un giudizio, effettuare un’ispezione, and prendersi cura di qualcosa. The noun cura can suggest attention or care, while manutenzione names planned upkeep. These are not automatic synonyms. Try replacing one expression in a review sentence and explain what is lost or gained in formality, precision, and emotion.
- Il comitato rinvia la decisione.· The committee postpones the decision.
- Ada formula una proposta di riparazione.· Ada puts forward a repair proposal.
- Nico esprime un giudizio severo.· Nico expresses a harsh judgment.
- La manutenzione non coincide sempre con il restauro.· Maintenance does not always mean restoration.
