Three versions of one event

Separate a witness memory, a technical note, and an archive record.

One closure, three viewpoints

This is a fictional case from Pontechiaro. On 12 November 1998, resident Marta felt the pedestrian bridge move at 16:40. A municipal inspection found a loose joint; technician Paolo received the written report at 17:05. The municipality closed the bridge at 17:20 as a precaution. Archivist Elena later found that the public notice was logged at 18:10 and an alternative route was posted the next morning. A movement felt by Marta does not prove what caused the joint to loosen, and the record does not say the bridge was about to collapse. Track the difference between observation, report, decision, and later memory.

  • Marta ricordava di aver sentito muovere il ponte alle sedici e quaranta.· Marta recalled feeling the bridge move at 16:40.
  • Paolo ricevette il rapporto alle diciassette e cinque.· Paolo received the report at 17:05.
  • Il Comune chiuse il ponte alle diciassette e venti.· The municipality closed the bridge at 17:20.
  • Elena trovò che l’avviso era stato registrato alle diciotto e dieci.· Elena found that the notice had been logged at 18:10.

What each account can establish

Marta can report her sensation and fear. Paolo can cite the inspection finding and the closure order. Elena can cite times in the archive. None of them can turn a personal impression into an engineering conclusion. Say the same event from each viewpoint, then mark every claim as witnessed, documented, or inferred. Later lessons will change tense and mood according to the speaker’s position in time and degree of certainty.

  • Marta temeva che il ponte potesse cedere.· Marta feared that the bridge might give way.
  • Paolo sapeva che il rapporto indicava un giunto allentato.· Paolo knew the report indicated a loose joint.
  • Elena osservò che l’avviso era successivo alla chiusura.· Elena observed that the notice came after the closure.
  • Non risulta che il ponte stesse per crollare.· The record does not show that the bridge was about to collapse.
