Memory, sequence and interpretation

Name the source and the time relation behind each claim.

Memory is not a dated record

Use ricordo, impressione, testimonianza, rapporto, avviso, and verbale with their precise meanings. A testimony gives a witness’s account; a dated report records an inspection result; an avviso announces a decision. Marta’s later memoir recalls fear and sound. Paolo’s report records a loose joint. Elena’s archive gives the time of the notice. Learn each noun with the action it supports.

  • Il ricordo di Marta riguarda il movimento percepito.· Marta’s memory concerns the movement she felt.
  • La testimonianza non dimostra la causa del guasto.· The testimony does not prove the cause of the defect.
  • Il rapporto segnala un giunto allentato.· The report identifies a loose joint.
  • L’avviso pubblico comunica la chiusura.· The public notice communicates the closure.

Build a reliable sequence

Distinguish prima di, dopo che, nel frattempo, in seguito, and a posteriori. Then distinguish ipotizzare from accertare: a hypothesis is not a finding. Retell the bridge closure in two sentences, first with clock times and then with temporal connectors. Do not write that a feared collapse occurred.

  • Prima della chiusura, Paolo aveva ricevuto il rapporto.· Before the closure, Paolo had received the report.
  • Dopo che il ponte fu chiuso, l’avviso venne registrato.· After the bridge was closed, the notice was logged.
  • In seguito fu indicato un percorso alternativo.· Later an alternative route was indicated.
  • A posteriori, Elena distinse il timore dai fatti accertati.· In retrospect, Elena distinguished fear from established facts.
