Advanced tense sequence
Set anteriority, simultaneity, and posteriority from a clear reference point.
Anchor each event to a reference point
In past narration, use the trapassato prossimo for an event completed before another past event: Paolo aveva ricevuto il rapporto prima che il ponte fosse chiuso. Use imperfetto for an ongoing past background: mentre Marta attraversava il ponte. Use passato remoto or passato prossimo for a bounded event: il Comune chiuse or ha chiuso il ponte. The tense choice tells the reader whether an action was already complete, in progress, or a new step. It does not prove cause.
- Mentre Marta attraversava il ponte, avvertì un movimento.· While Marta was crossing the bridge, she felt movement.
- Paolo aveva ricevuto il rapporto prima della chiusura.· Paolo had received the report before the closure.
- Il Comune chiuse il ponte alle diciassette e venti.· The municipality closed the bridge at 17:20.
- Quando Elena lesse l’avviso, il ponte era già stato chiuso.· When Elena read the notice, the bridge had already been closed.
Look forward from the past or from the future
For an event still future from a past viewpoint, use the past conditional in a retrospective narrative: alle 17:05 Paolo ricevette il rapporto; quindici minuti dopo, il Comune avrebbe chiuso il ponte. This tells the reader what happened later without claiming Paolo knew the decision in advance. For an event complete before a future reference point, use futuro anteriore: quando avranno pubblicato il percorso, i residenti potranno consultarlo. With a past verb of uncertainty, the subordinate mood and time relation also matter: Marta pensava che il ponte potesse cedere (simultaneous or later fear); pensava che il ponte avesse ceduto (earlier event). Do not change a feared future event into a completed event.
- Quindici minuti dopo, il Comune avrebbe chiuso il ponte.· Fifteen minutes later, the municipality would close the bridge.
- Marta temeva che il ponte potesse cedere.· Marta feared the bridge might give way.
- Quando avranno pubblicato il percorso, lo leggeremo.· When they have posted the route, we will read it.
- Elena notò che l’avviso era stato registrato più tardi.· Elena noted that the notice had been logged later.
