Keep the historical sequence and source frame
For the 1904 episode, passato remoto advances dated events, imperfetto gives background, and trapassato remoto can place a completed action before another in literary narration. In a present-day symposium, use present for what a source now says and conditional language for a proposed pilot. Do not turn “the record says” into “we know every consequence.” Repair this false sequence: «Il 20 maggio Marta scrive il diario e il 12 maggio vede la crepa, dunque il diario fu scritto prima dell’avviso». The diary was written later, regardless of narrative tense.
- Nel 1904 Marta vide la crepa mentre il fiume cresceva.· In 1904 Marta saw the crack while the river was rising.
- Appena ebbe avvertito il sindaco, tornò al ponte.· As soon as she had warned the mayor, she returned to the bridge.
- Oggi il registro attesta che il sindaco ordinò la chiusura.· Today the record documents that the mayor ordered the closure.
- Il progetto partirebbe solo dopo una decisione favorevole.· The project would start only after a favourable decision.
Repair logic, actor, and register
A condizione che requires subjunctive in this conditional construction: «a condizione che i diritti siano verificati». An implicit clause such as «Dopo aver controllato i diritti, Silvia presenterà la bozza» normally shares its understood subject with the main clause: Silvia does both actions. For different actors, use an explicit clause. In a formal address to the committee, use «Vi presento» for the group or avoid direct address; do not switch between informal tu and courtesy Lei for one person without a reason. A connector such as pertanto must express a justified conclusion, not hide a gap in the evidence.
- A condizione che i diritti siano verificati, il pilota potrà iniziare.· Provided the rights are checked, the pilot can begin.
- Dopo aver controllato i diritti, Silvia presenterà la bozza.· After checking the rights, Silvia will present the draft.
- Dopo che il legale avrà controllato i diritti, Silvia presenterà la bozza.· After the lawyer has checked the rights, Silvia will present the draft.
- Il verbale non registra un voto; pertanto non parlo di approvazione.· The minutes record no vote; therefore I do not speak of approval.
