Specialist Italian: legal, medical and academic registers
How specialist Italian works: terms and collocations, per X si intende definitions, hedging, deontic va + participle, nominal style, and plain public versions.
Every profession writes its own Italian. Linguists call these varieties «linguaggi settoriali» or «lingue speciali»: the language of law, medicine, science, administration, finance or engineering. They share the grammar of standard Italian but differ in vocabulary, in preferred structures and in fixed conventions, and each is written first for insiders.
Specialist Italian is not just formal Italian with harder words. Its key features are terminology with fixed meanings, definitions that set the scope of those terms, structures that state obligation or uncertainty precisely, and a syntax that favours nouns, impersonal verbs and the passive. Formal register and nominalisation, covered in their own articles, are the base; this topic is about the conventions of particular fields and about moving accurately between expert and public versions of the same content.
Compare a hospital letter, «Il paziente presenta ipertensione arteriosa e va rivalutato tra tre mesi», with what the doctor might say in the surgery: «Ha la pressione alta: ci rivediamo fra tre mesi». The facts are identical; the readers, and therefore the forms, are not.
| Field | Typical feature | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Academic | hedging, impersonal verbs | I dati suggeriscono una correlazione. |
| Administrative | nominal style, fixed formulas | Si invitano gli utenti a presentare domanda entro il 30 aprile. |
| Legal | defined parties, verbs of obligation | Il conduttore è tenuto a pagare il canone entro il giorno 5 di ogni mese. |
| Medical | Greek and Latin terms, presentare for symptoms | La paziente presenta febbre e dispnea. |
| News reporting | conditional for unconfirmed claims | Secondo fonti locali, i danni sarebbero ingenti. |
Terminology and specialist collocations
A term («termine») is a word with one defined meaning inside its field, and that meaning does not shift with context. Many terms look like ordinary words: «campione» (a sample), «significativo» (statistically significant, not merely “important”), «acuto» (of sudden onset, in medicine), «causa» (a lawsuit, in law), «conduttore» and «locatore» (tenant and landlord in a lease). Reading a specialist text means noticing when an everyday word has become a term.
Terms come with fixed partners. Medicine «pone una diagnosi» and «somministra un farmaco»; law «presenta ricorso», «sporge denuncia», «stipula un contratto» and «emette una sentenza»; research «formula un’ipotesi», «raccoglie dati» and «trae conclusioni»; administration «emana un decreto» and «adotta una delibera». Using the everyday verb, such as «fare denuncia» for «sporgere denuncia» in a legal brief, marks the writer as an outsider even when the meaning is clear.
Legal and administrative Italian also relies on fixed connecting formulas: «ai sensi dell’articolo 3» (under article 3), «fatto salvo» (without prejudice to), «in deroga a» (by way of exception to), «salvo diversa indicazione» (unless otherwise stated). Learn them as units.
- Il medico ha posto una diagnosi di polmonite. · The doctor diagnosed pneumonia.
- L’azienda ha presentato ricorso contro la sentenza. · The company appealed against the ruling.
- Ai sensi dell’articolo 5, il contratto si rinnova automaticamente. · Under article 5, the contract renews automatically.
Definitions and qualified claims
A specialist definition names a general class and the feature that distinguishes the term within it. The standard formula is «Per X si intende Y»: «Per paziente fragile si intende una persona con più patologie croniche e ridotta autonomia». Alternatives are «Si definisce X…», «X è un Y che…» and, in laws and contracts, «Ai fini del presente regolamento, per X si intende…». The class is a noun phrase: a definition never starts with «quando» or «se», a calque of the English “X is when…”.
Qualification sets the domain in which a claim holds. «Limitatamente ai casi osservati», «sulla base dei dati disponibili», «salvo eccezioni» and «nei limiti del campione» place a boundary next to the claim, where no reader can miss it. Academic Italian also grades certainty through the verb: «i dati dimostrano» is strong, «indicano» weaker, «suggeriscono» weaker still, and «si ipotizza che» presents a hypothesis still to be tested.
Journalism and many reports use the conditional to attribute an unverified claim: «Secondo la polizia, l’uomo avrebbe agito da solo». This conditional of reported information tells the reader that the writer is not vouching for the fact. It is standard Italian, not a sign of hesitation, and it gives way to the indicative once the fact is confirmed.
- Per reddito familiare si intende la somma dei redditi di tutti i componenti del nucleo. · Household income means the sum of the incomes of all members of the household.
- Sulla base dei dati disponibili, il farmaco sembra ben tollerato. · On the basis of the available data, the drug appears to be well tolerated.
- Secondo indiscrezioni, l’accordo sarebbe già stato firmato. · According to unconfirmed reports, the agreement has already been signed.
Specialist syntax: obligation, impersonality and nominal style
Rules and procedures need precise ways of saying what must happen. Besides «dovere», specialist Italian uses «essere tenuto a» (to be required to), the very formal «è fatto obbligo di», and «andare» plus a past participle, which expresses necessity in the passive: «La domanda va presentata entro il 30 aprile», “must be submitted”. In laws and contracts the present and future indicative also carry obligation: «Il conduttore versa il canone mensile» and «Il conduttore dovrà versare il canone» both state what the tenant is bound to do, not a fact or a prediction.
Impersonal and passive structures foreground the procedure: «Si procede alla verifica», «Le domande vengono esaminate in ordine di arrivo». Administrative acts open with fixed participial formulas listing the grounds of a decision: «Visto il decreto…», «Considerato che…», «Premesso che…». Nominal style packs whole actions into nouns: «la verifica del rispetto dei requisiti di accesso».
All three save words, and all three can hide the agent. Where responsibility matters (who decided, who must check, who is liable) restore the actor: «La commissione verifica i requisiti» is as formal as «Si procede alla verifica dei requisiti», and far more informative.
- Il modulo va firmato da entrambi i genitori. · The form must be signed by both parents.
- Il locatore è tenuto a restituire il deposito cauzionale alla fine del contratto. · The landlord is required to return the security deposit at the end of the lease.
- Considerato che i lavori non sono stati completati, il pagamento è sospeso. · Given that the works have not been completed, payment is suspended.
From expert to public: change the reader, not the facts
Mediating specialist content means keeping every fact, limit and condition while changing the form. Turn nouns back into verbs with subjects, replace terms with plain words or gloss them at first use, and move the practical information to the start. «Si comunica che l’erogazione del servizio idrico sarà sospesa» becomes «Domani mattina l’acqua sarà sospesa dalle 8 alle 12»; «Il paziente è affetto da ipertensione» becomes «Ha la pressione alta».
Simplifying must not upgrade certainty. If a study «suggerisce» an association, the public version cannot say that coffee «fa vivere di più». If a trial is planned, the public version cannot say it has started. Italian public bodies have long promoted plain-language writing for exactly this reason: the formulas of «burocratese», the mocking name for impenetrable officialese, often hide what the reader actually has to do.
Two checks help. First, list the facts with their status (confirmed, estimated, planned, hypothesised) and see whether each version preserves it. Second, ask what the reader must do after reading; if the public version does not say so in its first two sentences, rewrite it.

- Se compaiono effetti indesiderati, smetta di prendere il farmaco e chiami il medico. · If you notice side effects, stop taking the medicine and call your doctor.
- Lo studio suggerisce un legame, ma non dimostra che sia il caffè a proteggere il cuore. · The study suggests a link, but does not prove that coffee itself protects the heart.
