Lead a panel

Moderate a pre-opening discussion without turning views into facts.

Prepare a precise role and speaking goal

You are Sofia, moderator of a seven-minute fictional Borgofaro pre-opening panel for residents and the project team. Leo wants an inviting title; Nadia has written a personal letter about the bench and notebook; a questioner wants a clear answer for tomorrow’s visitors. Prepare for three minutes. Open by stating the limited purpose: identify what can be said now and which decision remains open. Give each speaker a question. Ask Leo why «ha già messo radici» is too strong; ask Nadia what her letter does and does not represent; ask the questioner what visitors need to know about the notebook. Do not present this exercise as an actual recorded public meeting.

  • Quali fatti possiamo comunicare oggi?· What facts can we communicate today?
  • Leo, che cosa intendevi con «già»?· Leo, what did you mean by “already”?
  • Nadia, parli a titolo personale?· Nadia, are you speaking personally?
  • Quale risposta serve a chi verrà domani?· What answer does tomorrow’s visitor need?

Moderate, repair and close for two audiences

Run the seven-minute panel with partners or record all four parts yourself. Interrupt politely if someone calls the notebook «già in mostra» or says Silvio moved the bench; distinguish what is documented from what is assumed. If «Interessante» leaves stance unclear, ask a follow-up. Give a 45-second closing summary for the public: opening planned tomorrow, bench by the window, notebook boxed and display undecided. Then give a 45-second closing note to the project team: name the unsupported draft claims and the open notebook decision. Listen to your recording or repeat the role-play. Check turn-taking, attribution, grammar, register, timing, and whether every correction was understood. The aim is not to make all speakers agree.

  • Mi fermo su «in mostra»: la decisione è ancora aperta.· I will pause on “on display”: the decision is still open.
  • Non risulta chi abbia spostato la panchina.· The record does not show who moved the bench.
  • Quando dici «interessante», intendi un assenso?· When you say “interesting”, do you mean agreement?
  • Riassumo ciò che sappiamo, non un accordo che non c’è.· I will summarise what we know, not an agreement we do not have.
