Metaphor and semantic fields
Name the source image, target idea and limit of the comparison.
Map a metaphor without treating it as evidence
A metaphor transfers selected features from one field to another. In the invented headline «La sala è un ponte tra passato e futuro», the source field is a bridge that connects places; the target is the room’s link between former station use and future reading use. The bench and Marta’s panel offer textual support for a limited link. But the image does not prove that every resident experiences continuity, nor that future use will last. Identify what is transferred, what is not, and which plain sentence states the supported point. «La sala conserva una panchina e cambia funzione» is less vivid but more exact.
- Il ponte collega due rive; la metafora collega due usi della sala.· A bridge joins two banks; the metaphor links two uses of the room.
- La panchina conservata sostiene un legame limitato con il passato.· The retained bench supports a limited link with the past.
- Il ponte non dimostra una memoria condivisa da tutti.· The bridge does not prove a memory shared by everyone.
- La sala conserva una panchina e cambia funzione.· The room keeps a bench and changes use.
Keep a semantic field coherent and proportionate
A semantic field groups related meanings. «Radici», «crescita» and «fiorire» draw on plants; «binari», «partenza» and «percorso» draw on travel. An extended image can organise a paragraph, but piling a train, plant and bridge into one sentence may force readers to resolve too many incompatible pictures. More importantly, «la lettura ha messo radici» claims durable growth that cannot be observed before opening. A writer may choose a modest movement image—«il nuovo uso prende forma»—if the next sentence immediately states the actual change. The rule is not “never mix images”; it is “know which relation each image helps the reader see, and test its implied time and certainty”.
- «Radici» e «fiorire» appartengono al campo delle piante.· “Roots” and “flower” belong to the plant field.
- «Binari» e «partenza» appartengono al campo del viaggio.· “Tracks” and “departure” belong to the travel field.
- Il nuovo uso prende forma nella sala rinnovata.· The new use takes shape in the renewed room.
- Un’immagine non anticipa la risposta dei futuri lettori.· An image cannot pre-empt future readers’ response.
