Connotation and semantic prosody
Separate local evaluation from a pattern that needs corpus evidence.
Read the evaluation carried by a choice
Connotation is the additional evaluative or associative colouring a word can carry in context. «Una trasformazione» describes the room’s change; «un trionfo» evaluates it as a major victory before a visitor has entered. «La stanza cambia funzione» is narrower than «Borgofaro rinasce», which implies a town-wide renewal. Near-synonyms are not interchangeable just because their dictionary cores overlap. In Sofia’s fictional editorial notes, «aprire un confronto» invites discussion, while «scatenare polemiche» frames the same proposed discussion as conflict. The difference is a choice of stance, not a measured public reaction.
- La sala cambia funzione.· The room changes use.
- «Un trionfo» valuta prima di osservare un risultato.· “A triumph” evaluates before a result is observed.
- Il testo può aprire un confronto.· The text can open a discussion.
- «Scatenare polemiche» colora il confronto come conflitto.· “Spark controversy” colours the discussion as conflict.
Do not infer semantic prosody from one invented line
Semantic prosody concerns evaluative tendencies that emerge from repeated co-occurrences across usage; it is not the sound of a speaker’s voice. One invented headline can show its local connotation, but cannot establish a corpus-wide tendency for a word. To test a broader claim, collect real examples from a suitable corpus, compare the words that repeatedly accompany the term, and record exceptions and register. In this lesson, the two invented pairs «innescare un problema» and «avviare un confronto» are only material for local editing. Sofia chooses the second because it names a possible discussion without claiming that the room caused a problem.
- Un esempio inventato mostra una scelta locale, non una frequenza generale.· One invented example shows a local choice, not a general frequency.
- Per una tendenza servono molte occorrenze in contesto.· A tendency requires many occurrences in context.
- «Innescare un problema» suggerisce una conseguenza negativa.· “Trigger a problem” suggests a negative consequence.
- «Avviare un confronto» indica l’inizio di una discussione.· “Start a discussion” indicates the start of a discussion.
