Use infinitives when the actor is clear
Dopo aver letto il registro, l’analista confrontò le cifre: the analyst both read and compared. The compound infinitive aver letto marks an earlier completed action. Prima di pubblicare la sintesi, l’analista deve verificare il denominatore: the same actor must verify before publishing. If the actors differ, an explicit clause is safer: Dopo che l’ufficio ebbe consegnato il registro, l’analista lo esaminò. Do not make the register appear to read or publish itself.
- Dopo aver letto il registro, l’analista confrontò le cifre.· After reading the register, the analyst compared the figures.
- Prima di pubblicare i risultati, l’analista controlla le unità.· Before publishing results, the analyst checks the units.
- Per distinguere ingressi e persone, occorre spiegare il metodo.· To distinguish entries and people, one must explain the method.
- Dopo che l’ufficio consegnò i fogli, l’analista li esaminò.· After the office delivered the forms, the analyst examined them.
Use participles and gerunds with care
A past participle can compress a passive relative clause: i dati raccolti nei quattro incontri = i dati che sono stati raccolti. A sentence-opening participle usually agrees with its own subject: Esaminate le schede, l’analista formulò una sintesi. A gerund can express a simultaneous action or a reason, but it must clearly attach to the main-clause actor: Confrontando le fonti, l’analista notò la differenza. A compressed clause should not imply that an observation caused a result when the sources only show sequence.
- I dati raccolti nei quattro incontri richiedono cautela.· The data collected across four sessions require care.
- Esaminate le schede, l’analista formulò una sintesi.· After examining the forms, the analyst made a synthesis.
- Confrontando le fonti, l’analista notò due denominatori.· Comparing sources, the analyst noticed two denominators.
- Avendo controllato le fatture, l’ufficio indicò la spesa documentata.· After checking invoices, the office stated documented spending.
