The Valdombra case
All people, places, and records in this Tappa are fictional. In Valdombra, bridge keeper Marta Riva noted a crack and a rising river at 22:00 on 12 May 1904. At 23:00 she warned mayor Paolo Neri. He then ordered the old bridge closed. At dawn on 13 May, the flood damaged it. The council inspected it on 16 May. Marta wrote a diary entry on 20 May. The sequence is given; the archive does not establish that the closure alone prevented a death.
- Il 12 maggio Marta notò una crepa nel ponte.· On 12 May Marta noticed a crack in the bridge.
- Alle ventitré avvertì il sindaco.· At 23:00 she warned the mayor.
- Il sindaco ordinò la chiusura del ponte.· The mayor ordered the bridge closed.
- All’alba del 13 maggio la piena danneggiò il ponte.· At dawn on 13 May the flood damaged the bridge.
A documented sequence is not a complete explanation
Keep the date of an event separate from the date of a later account. A diary entry written on 20 May can describe what Marta says happened on 12 May; it is not itself an event on 12 May. A historian can state that the mayor ordered the closure after the warning. The claim that this decision saved lives would require evidence the fictional archive does not provide. Use passato remoto to move the narrative forward and imperfetto for the setting.
- La corrente cresceva; Marta vide la crepa.· The current was rising; Marta saw the crack.
- Il diario fu scritto il 20 maggio, non il 12.· The diary was written on 20 May, not on 12 May.
- I registri confermano l’ordine di chiusura.· The records confirm the closure order.
- Non possiamo affermare che la chiusura salvò delle vite.· We cannot claim that the closure saved lives.
