Narrative mission
Turn a flawed caption into a defensible historical narrative.
Audit a fictional museum caption
An editor gives you this inaccurate draft about the fictional Valdombra case: «Il 12 maggio 1904 Marta vide una crepa. Il ponte crollò subito; l’ordine del sindaco salvò cinquanta persone. Il diario, scritto quella notte, prova ogni dettaglio». Correct it without inventing new evidence. The flood damaged the bridge at dawn on 13 May; the case does not say it collapsed. The register records the closure order, not a count of lives saved. Marta wrote her diary on 20 May. In a short Italian note to the editor, list these three errors and the source that can support each correction.
- La piena danneggiò il ponte il 13 maggio.· The flood damaged the bridge on 13 May.
- Il testo non afferma che il ponte crollò.· The text does not state that the bridge collapsed.
- Il registro attesta l’ordine di chiusura, non un numero di vite salvate.· The record documents the closure order, not a number of saved lives.
- Marta scrisse il diario il 20 maggio.· Marta wrote the diary on 20 May.
Deliver the corrected account
Write a new 120–160-word Italian caption, explicitly marked as fiction. Keep the 12, 13, 16, and 20 May dates in order. Use passato remoto for the main sequence, imperfetto for one background state, and a trapassato remoto clause only if it clarifies which completed action came first. Add one sentence that explains why the evidence cannot settle how many lives the closure saved. Then give a one-minute spoken version for visitors. You can use historic present in the spoken version if you sustain it as a deliberate viewpoint, but do not add a new fact.
- Mentre il fiume cresceva, Marta annotò una crepa.· While the river was rising, Marta noted a crack.
- Appena ebbe avvertito il sindaco, tornò al ponte.· As soon as she had warned the mayor, she returned to the bridge.
- Il consiglio ispezionò la struttura il 16 maggio.· The council inspected the structure on 16 May.
- Questa ricostruzione immaginaria non quantifica vite salvate.· This fictional reconstruction does not quantify lives saved.
